The church at Monk Bretton has stood as a pillar of community life since its foundation stone was laid on 6 July 1876. This year marks an extraordinary milestone: 150 years of shared history, faith, and fellowship. To honour this legacy, a series of events will bring together parishioners and visitors alike, celebrating the rich tapestry of parish life through music, food, and a remarkable exhibition of memories. These celebrations offer a unique chance to reflect on the past, enjoy the present, and look forward to the future of this vibrant community.

A Walk Through 150 Years of Parish Life

The heart of the celebration is an archive exhibition open daily throughout the week inside the church. This exhibition features a carefully curated collection of photographs, documents, and memorabilia that tell the story of the parish’s evolution over a century and a half. Visitors can explore how the church has been a centre for worship, community gatherings, and social support through changing times.

The displays highlight key moments such as the church’s construction, wartime efforts, community outreach programs, and the many activities that have brought people together. Parishioners will find familiar faces and stories, while newcomers can gain insight into the deep roots and ongoing spirit of the community.

Weekend One: Launch, Tea, and Sacred Music

The first weekend of celebrations begins on Sunday, 5 July, with a series of events designed to engage all the senses and bring people together.

  • 2:00 pm – Opening Music Recital

The celebrations start with a music recital featuring the church’s talented organist alongside special guests. This performance will showcase sacred music that has been part of the church’s tradition, setting a reflective and joyful tone for the week ahead.

Following the recital, guests are invited to enjoy a delicious Afternoon Tea served inside the church. Priced at £10 per person, this event offers a chance to relax, chat, and savour classic treats in a warm, welcoming setting.

  • 6:00 pm – Choral Evensong

The day concludes with a traditional Choral Evensong service using the Book of Common Prayer. The Pusey Consort will lead the choir, providing a moving and spiritual experience that connects worshippers with centuries of Anglican heritage.

The second weekend continues the celebrations with a focus on community spirit expressed through food, music, and worship.
