A landmark century and a half of local history was marked in style this July as St Paul’s Church, Monk Bretton, successfully hosted its highly anticipated 150th anniversary festival. The week-long celebration brought the local community together to honour 150 years of parish life since the church’s foundation stone was first laid on 6 July 1876.

Throughout the entire anniversary week, doors were thrown open to the public for an extensive heritage exhibition. Packed crowds stepped inside the Grade II listed building to explore rare photos, archives, and historical memorabilia tracking 150 years of changing village activities, family milestones, and church life.

The celebrations launched on Sunday 5 July with a spectacular afternoon music recital, showcasing the exceptional talents of the parish organist alongside invited special guest musicians. Following the final notes of the recital, visitors gathered inside the beautifully decorated church for a bustling, completely sold-out celebratory afternoon tea.

The spiritual heritage of the parish took centre stage on Sunday evening with a traditional Book of Common Prayer Choral Evensong. The service featured stunning liturgical music sung by the Leeds-based chamber choir, The Pusey Consort, drawing visitors from across the Barnsley borough.

The historic week drew to a powerful, uplifting conclusion on Sunday 12 July with a special "Songs of Praise" service. The congregation filled the pews to sing a collection of the community's favourite hymns, bringing the milestone event to a deeply moving close. We were joined a delegation from the Masonic Lodge (Friendly Lodge (1513) Barnsley) who had officiated at the ceremony in 1876, they had special dispensation to wear their regalia. We were also joined by members of the 12th Barnsley (Monk Bretton) Air Scout Group who performed a traditional campfire song. Music was provided by the Cawthorne Brass Band.

Following the finale, parish organisers extended a public message of gratitude to the community. The church committee thanked the hundreds of residents who attended, the recital performers, the dedicated team of volunteers who prepared the afternoon tea, and the readers and musicians who made the final service so memorable.
